About my Blog

i really don't like to cook. no, really. but i like to bake, and i like healthy, and i like to play at cooking especially when the boys are involved and i like to try to give the best to my kids... you know, without conforming to the 'budak mesti makan nasik baru kenyang' dictum. UNFORTUNATELY, the boys are kinda picky with what they eat. so it's always a fun, continuous, play-adventure-experiment thing. and along the way, i'm so absolutely thrilled if my play helps other people and their culinary journey with their kids, too. here's to PLAYING AT COOKING!

It's freezing!

If anybody has bought butternut squash in malaysia they will know that it is horribly expensive! Or blueberries. Or raspberries. Or other berries. Heck, even MANGO is mahal in Malaysia.

Anyway, i had bought myself a (small) hunk of butternut squash the other day. Buat puree of course but i was left with about half the squash left. I COULD just steam it plain or even make another recipe with it but i didn't have any baby cubes left. So guess what i did?

I just left it.

For a while je....mahal wei.

Anyway, i don't quite know how i got the idea but it just popped into my head to FREEZE IT. Yup, chuck it in the freezer so that it would keep. But with squash, or most other vegetables out there, you can't just put the whole hunk in. As i found out.

WHAT YOU DO.
• peel and cut the squash into chunks/slices/however you want it.
• if you want to wash it, you can. Just be sure to pat dry or elae there will be like, icicles.
• put on a plate/tray in one layer and put in freezer.
• once it's frozen (at least on the outside) put in a plastic bag to keep.
• when you want to use it, just use as-is. No need to thaw (kot). I've not used mine yet.

I've since frozen blueberries, capsicum, broccoli. Perfect way to preserve those fruit n veg you bought on a kiasu shopping spree and suddenly couldn't find time to cook!!

Btw, you can eat the berries frozen. Sedaaap.
