About my Blog

i really don't like to cook. no, really. but i like to bake, and i like healthy, and i like to play at cooking especially when the boys are involved and i like to try to give the best to my kids... you know, without conforming to the 'budak mesti makan nasik baru kenyang' dictum. UNFORTUNATELY, the boys are kinda picky with what they eat. so it's always a fun, continuous, play-adventure-experiment thing. and along the way, i'm so absolutely thrilled if my play helps other people and their culinary journey with their kids, too. here's to PLAYING AT COOKING!

croquettes

oh my god! i've not visited here for so long, i've almost forgotten how the site looks like!! hahahaha!! does that mean that i've not been cooking since the last time? pretty much, i think.

anyway, today i made these things called beef croquettes aka pegedil. :P well, yes. but i suppose a rather modern version la kot. croquettes makes it sound more gourmet don't you think? it's simple, quite nice and delicious even BEFORE it becomes the croquettes.

what you need
  • 400g potatoes
  • 250g minced beef (i used mutton because for some reason, that was the only thing in my freezer)
  • one big onion, finely chopped
  • thyme
  • parsley
  • 1 tbsp tomato ketchup
  • 0.5 tsp worcestershire sauce
  • salt and pepper to taste
  • flour to coat

what you do

  • peel, boil and mash the potatoes with a glob of butter. set aside to cool
  • heat some oil and fry the onions until tender and transparent
  • add the mince, and fry until browned. this takes about a minute-ish
  • put in some thyme (although i didn't use it - takde), salt and pepper to taste, and then fry the mix some more - about a minute
  • add the mince mix to the potato and add the chopped parsley (again, i didn't use it cause i didn't have it), ketchup and worcestershire sauce.
  • stir well then pop in the fridge for a while to cool
  • once cool, shape it into balls, or fat sausage shapes and roll in the flour to coat. the mixture was a bit soft i find so if you're not comfortable with it, chuck some flour in.
  • put in the fridge again to chill, at least an hour. i did a short cut and chucked it in the freezer hehe
  • heat some oil to brown. try and fry with as little oil as possible. too much oil and it'll break. i deep fried my first batch a la pegedil and the whole thing DISINTEGRATED!!
  • voila! croquettes!!

Little A loved this dish dipped in ketchup. Big A actually tried some so that's an improvement. there's a gravy that goes with it but i've yet to try it (cause it read like it was tricky :p). you can freeze this, so it's good as a stanby thing. i'm thinking of making it for a party. (ambitiousnya!)
