About my Blog

i really don't like to cook. no, really. but i like to bake, and i like healthy, and i like to play at cooking especially when the boys are involved and i like to try to give the best to my kids... you know, without conforming to the 'budak mesti makan nasik baru kenyang' dictum. UNFORTUNATELY, the boys are kinda picky with what they eat. so it's always a fun, continuous, play-adventure-experiment thing. and along the way, i'm so absolutely thrilled if my play helps other people and their culinary journey with their kids, too. here's to PLAYING AT COOKING!

orange rice

i don't really cook rice. nasik and lauk is something which i loathe to do cause i think it's leceh. come to think of it, my experimenting only goes as far as baking simple (emphasis on simple) muffins, cupcakes, cookies.

but i thought it would be nice to cook something akin to chicken rice since the boys like it so much. but what started out as chicken rice morphed to rice which is flavoured, and kurma. and this is because of a simple reason: i don't really know how to cook chicken rice! hahahaha!!!

i started off thinking that i could tumis the normal onions and spices, you know, the way every single item of malay cooking seems to start with. then add in a good dollop of chicken stock cubes (kan i wanted to make chicken rice? it has to actually TASTE like it! hahaha) so halfway through the prep i thought, hang on, maybe we could add some carrot - added fibre tu!

and so i tumised it all, added the rice water and bunged it on the rice cooker. it didn't cook through first time round (what does!) and so came the adding water and switching on rice cooker for about 3 times. sambil masak kurma... which was no mean feat, since i don't do things in tandem as a rule, ok. hahahaha

and it turned out ok. the rice was ORANGE, like really vivid. and the boys ate lots. i think it's because of the orange colour. either that or it took me so long to make it work that they were too hungry to even care! LOL!!! ok, next time i want to try putting food colouring la, in the rice. heheeh... then maybe it'll taste nicer to them!
